Getting to Prince of Wales Island....

Prince of Wales Island is located right at the bottom of the southeastern pan handle of Alaska, the islands off the coast of Canada.

To get here, you have to fly from Seattle to Ketchikan.  There are 3 flights a day.  If you don't take the morning one you will probably have to do an overnight in Ketchikan.

From Ketchikan, you may take the ferry or a floatplane.  The ferry costs about $40 per person one way and leaves Ketchikan at 3.30pm every afternoon arriving on POW in Hollis at 6.30pm.  It is a stunning trip and fairly reliable in the summer.  You should organize ahead to have a rental car left there for you or call a day ahead and organize the taxi to pick you up.  It is a 35 minute drive from Hollis to Klawock, and then from Klawock: 10 minutes to Craig; 45 minutes to Thorne Bay; over an hour to Naukati, around 1.5 hours to Coffman Cove; and two or three hours to Whale Pass.  The return trip from Hollis to Ketchikan leaves every morning at 8am.

There are a few floatplane services to the island.  A floatplane trip costs around $120 one way and takes about 45 minutes.  It is a great timesaver particularly if you arrive in Ketchikan in the afternoon, but planes only fly in good weather, so you can't always rely on them.  Floatplanes land in Craig, Hollis or Thorne Bay. (Pacific Airways details on "Wanted/Available" page)

Prince of Wales Island is remote and at the mercy of weather conditions, so you will do yourself a favor if you leave a flexible itinerary. Quick trips in the spring or fall when the weather is changing often need to be replanned, and even summer can be unpredictable.

So be prepared to live the slow life, enjoy the scenery and relax.  You are getting off the beaten path when you come here...
