Floathouses...

Yes, this house is floating. An icon of the old
logging days, float houses were built so that loggers could take their homes
and families with them when they moved to different locations around the
island. Many were beautifully built and sat on large floats that could
be anchored. This one is sitting on a
60x40 float. It is in a little bay anchored to a little island behind
it.
Float house living could be very interesting. They
appear to be be stable, but they do move around gently. Occasionally a relaxed guest staring out of the window
would suddenly jump in alarm as the view in the window would drift sleepily
to one side. Sometimes the only other sign that something was amiss
would be the pull cords for the lights swinging in harmony and the hanging
fruit basket moving around on its own initiative.

Pets seem to enjoy floathouse life.

Built by someone who worked with wood, some floathouses
could be beautifully built and very charming. You could even have a
greenhouse on them!

With lovely water views all around, float house life could
be a delight. But it was not easy. You have to check the anchors
regularly, sometimes the surface of the bay would freeze around you, and in
a bad winter storm, it could feel like you were going to find yourself in
Japan by morning!

Yet another wild and wayward home...
