Wadleigh Island Information... Located on
the west side of Prince of Wales Island, Wadleigh Island sits to the west of
Craig and Klawock. Lots are accessible from either port. The east side of Wadleigh Island (blocks G&F) is more suitable for those who like to come to town more regularly. With only a 5 - 15 minute boat ride to Craig or Klawock dock, the east side of Wadleigh Island offers a convenient alternative for those who work in town. Fairly secluded, many people prefer this lifestyle to living in town. From Blocks G and F there are stunning views overlooking the towns, sawmill and the mountains behind Craig and Klawock. From Block B there is easy and protected kayaking around Peratrovich Island with lots of little islands to explore. Here you could kayak to town and live without a skiff if you really want to get back to basics! The west side of Wadleigh Island takes 15 - 30 minutes from either Craig or Klawock dock. But the views and isolation when you get there are worth it. The view looks out over large stretches of ocean dotted with islands and distant mountains and enjoys great summer sunsets! You can't see or hear of town, just the occasional fishing boat going by. Many people choose the west side for a summer home, where they can enjoy the magnificent scenery for long periods without coming to town. Many use this side as a place to stay during the fishing season; there is a herring area close in, and it is only a short jump to the outside waters where the big salmon swim. For year-round living, the west side can be subject to some wild weather (November is usually the wildest, but the sea is an unpredictable thing), so be prepared for stretches without being able to get to town. It is more exposed than the east side, and you will need to learn the route, so it is best for the boat savvy. For the west side you will need to watch the weather and learn the waters. Moorage in Klawock Dock is very cheap, $11 per ft per year. Parking is available at the dock. The airport is very quiet, most air traffic is via float plane, from Craig, Thorne Bay and Hollis. Most lots on the island are long and narrow, usually with 100' - 130' feet of waterfront and 300' - 350' deep. The lots are wooded, some with old growth cedar and hemlock. The back property line generally backs into clear-cut or 2nd growth forest. The beaches vary from sandy to rocky, some are tideland and some have better docking potential than others. There is no electricity available on the island, but there is good mobile phone reception (at least on the east side). Solar and wind power are used with success. If you have a clear view to the SE, satellite internet is a good possibility. The new super-quiet generators make off-the-grid living much easier. Rainwater catchments systems and wastewater outfall from septic tanks are common. Per foot, this waterfront property is probably some of the most reasonably priced in North America.
